What Is the Stroop Effect?
Here is a quick experiment: look at the word “BLUE” printed in red ink, and say the color of the ink out loud. If you hesitated, you just felt the Stroop effect — one of the most replicated findings in all of psychology.
In 1935, John Ridley Stroop showed that when a word's meaning conflicts with its ink color, people slow down and make more errors naming the ink. Reading is so automatic that it is nearly impossible to suppress; your brain processes the word whether you want it to or not.
Why the conflict matters
The task forces two brain systems to compete: an automatic one (reading the word) and a controlled one (naming the ink). Resolving that competition is the job of attention control — the mental skill that lets you stay on a task when a notification, a tab, or a stray thought pulls at you.
That is why researchers use the Stroop task to study selective attention and response inhibition, and why it shows up everywhere from psychology labs to clinical screening tools.
